Dealing With Sensitive Teeth? Learn What Your Mouth Is Telling You
Every season in NYC is fantastic in its own way. The cold weather is finally behind us, and summer is just around the corner. There is something truly relaxing and calming about sitting on a bench in Central Park during this time of year. Perhaps you would love to buy an ice cream from a local vendor to enjoy on a beautiful day in the park but know that you will not enjoy the sensation in your teeth. If you find yourself avoiding foods like ice cream that are extremely cold, you may be experiencing tooth sensitivity and have a problem with your oral health.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
If you find yourself cringing when eating extremely hot or cold foods, you have sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity is something we all experience from time to time; however, if it is happening daily, you may have an oral health problem that needs to be remedied. Our teeth are composed of many layers and when the outer layer, also known as the enamel, becomes worn or damaged, you may experience discomfort. Tooth sensitivity is to be expected following certain dental treatments, but we will always disclose that information when we give our follow-up care directions. Tooth sensitivity can also be caused by:
- Receding gums
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Cracked or chipped tooth
- Tooth grinding
- Excessive teeth whitening
- Improper brushing techniques
Ways to Help Tooth Sensitivity
While you are waiting for your appointment to determine if you have damage to your teeth, we would recommend evaluating the manner in which you brush your teeth. Be sure to use gentle motions, and do not brush too hard or vigorously. We recommend using an approved electric toothbrush or manual toothbrush with soft bristles. We also recommend using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.
If you are experiencing frequent bouts of teeth sensitivity, we recommend calling our office located in the Upper East Side to schedule an appointment. We will be happy to meet with you to evaluate your symptoms and ensure that nothing more serious is occurring. See you soon!
