Helping Patients With Phobias
During the interview with Donna Drake, Dr. Perlman discusses in detail how he helps patients who have dental phobias. He feels it is extremely important to be a good listener and keep the lines of communication open. He wants to know why a patient feels the way they do about the dentist so he does not repeat what upset them. Every patient gets the individualized treatment they need so that they have the best experience possible. The office helps to achieve this by using distraction methods such as noise cancelling headphones and stress balls.
Dr. Perlman believes in establishing trust and wants patients to know that we are all in this together. He never wants a patient to feel like they can’t have a break during treatment, so he uses methods such as taking a break when the patient raises their left hand.
Which Toothbrush is Best?
Dr. Perlman recommends whichever toothbrush will clean your teeth properly. He has seen many patients who have excellent oral health using a manual, nylon, soft-bristled toothbrush. They use the proper technique of brushing for two minutes and being sure to brush every tooth from the proper angle. For patients with dexterity issues or ones who don’t brush quite as well, an electric brush would be a good choice.
